An Overview of Avondale

Avondale Horse and Pony club is situated at the end of Catherine Street, St Ives with views towards Chatswood and the city of Sydney. Avondale Pony Club is run under the rules and regulations of the Pony Club Association of NSW (PCA). View their web site at Avondale belongs to Zone 23 of the PCA and as such will compete and hold events on behalf of the zone. At all times safety is paramount to the running of the club. The grounds have a sand arena, cross country course, stables, machinery/storage shed and club house. Maintenance of the grounds and facilities are carried out by club members. Following a rally day, we ask that all members assist by taking one small bag of rubbish with them.Jamboree smiling faces

Objectives of Pony Club

  • To encourage young people to ride and to learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses and riding
  • To provide instruction in riding and horsemastership and to instill in members the proper care of their animals
  • To promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, thereby cultivating strength of character and self-discipline

Special Events

During the year the club will hold special events eg. dressage competition, showjumping etc. They may be closed (ie only members) or open. We are also designated one zone event to host which is totally run by the club. In all these events, parents and children are asked to help in as many ways as possible as all money will go back into the club but also these events showcase the club.


Avondale Pony Club is part of Zone 23, which also includes the following
Jess and honey State Equitation Pony Clubs Forest Hills, Kenthurst, Arcadia, Ryde,Eastern Suburbs, Dural and Manly Warringah.

During each year a zone event is held in all of the disciplines (Sporting, Show Jumping & Showjumping Equitation, Dressage, Mounted Games and One Day Event) plus a Gymkhana and a Jamboree.

This means our riders compete against other riders in the zone.

State competitions are held approximately 6 weeks after Zone competitions.

In all competitions age is taken as the age of the rider on the day of the competition.

House Rules

  • Children under 16 must have a parent/guardian present.
  • Each member is responsible for spreading their horse’s manure – no matter where or when they manured.
  • New or additional horses must be registered with the secretary and the rider/mount assessed by the Senior Instructor before joining in rally day activities.
  • Parents are expected to help with set-up, pack-up, canteen, etc as required each rally day – the club and all its activities are run entirely by volunteers.
  • In the driveway, cars without floats give way to cars with floats.
  • Horses may only be tied to floats that have a vehicle attached.
  • The gate must be shut at all times (please do not let children swing on it).
  • No dogs are allowed off the lead.
  • Lunging of horses may be done in the designated area. (near jumping lane)
    Any person (child or adult) who is lunging a horse must use a Pony Club approved helmet, enclosed shoes / boots and gloves.
  • Lunging gear must meet Pony Club requirements.
